Elmiron

WHAT IS ELMIRON?

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium), a drug manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, is a medication often prescribed to treat interstitial cystitis (IC), a condition that affects the bladder, also known as Painful Bladder Syndrome. Most patients who are prescribed Elmiron are women over the age of 50 years old. Since there is no cure for IC, patients tend to take the medication long-term to relieve discomfort and pain.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR INJURIES?

Although some common side effects attributed to Elmiron tend to be mild, recently, there have been many reports of the medication causing a visual condition called maculopathy, as a result of the drug’s toxicity on the retina. Some symptoms of this ailment include blurred vision, difficulty adjusting to low lighting, and ability to see fine details.
