Asbestos
WHAT IS ASBESTOS?
Asbestos is a mineral that has been mined and commercialized in the U.S. since the 1800s. It is composed of fibers that are resistant to heat, fire, electricity and corrosion. For these reasons, asbestos has been widely used in a range of industries such as construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, automotive, plastics, adhesives, etc.
WHAT ARE THE MAJOR INJURIES?
Exposure to asbestos has very dangerous and potentially fatal risks. When asbestos residue is inhaled or ingested, has the potential to have adverse lifelong effects on the body. The symptoms of exposure to asbestos may take years to manifest. In order to tie the symptoms to asbestos, health professionals must carefully review a patient’s medical and work history as the patient may have unintentionally been exposed to asbestos fibers at various work sites or around the household where asbestos-containing materials were in use.
The injuries from exposure to asbestos are vast. Once the fibers are in the body, the process is irreversible. Exposure to asbestos can sometimes cause mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is found in the lining of the lung, chest and the abdomen and heart. Another disease exclusive to asbestos is asbestosis, a restrictive long-term inflammation and scarring of the lungs. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, and chest tightness which can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and pulmonary heart disease. Asbestos can also cause other types of cancer beyond that of the lungs.
