On Thursday, February 27th, a jury verdict was delivered against J&J that awards Blanca Mure-Cabrera with $3 million for past medical expenses and $6 million for past and future pain and suffering. A lifetime user of J&J baby powder, the plaintiff claimed the product contributed to the development of her mesothelioma.
The jury found J&J responsible for hiding the dangers of asbestos and selling a defective product. This is the second loss for J&J this year; in addition, J&J reached settlements of two other lawsuits mid-trial. J&J will be appealing the verdict. The company remains firm in their position that their product is asbestos-free, which they claim is backed by years of scientific research and data. J&J stated that they have no plans to settle cases or to establish a settlement program for baby powder claims.
