Litigation Update: Johnson & Johnson to Pay $100 Million to Settle Over 1,000 Talc Cases

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $100 Million to terminate over 1,000 lawsuits alleging their baby powder contained asbestos which caused cancer in many of the users of the product. The settlement includes lawsuits brought by three firms: Simmons Hanly Conroy, Simon Greenstone Panatier PC and the Lanier Law Firm

Upon the agreement on the settlement, Johnson & Johnson stated that it is not an indication of guilt, as they stand strong in their claim that their baby power did not contain asbestos. Instead, they claimed that settling the lawsuits in bulk is part of their strategy as opposed to addressing each case on an individual basis.  J&J has already replaced the talc ingredient with starch, both in the U.S. and Canada.

Johnson & Johnson still has over 20,000 lawsuits pending alleging their baby powder contained asbestos.
